Toralles former Station
Opened in 1880, the old Toralles station consisted of a two-storey building with a rectangular floor plan and an adjoining gabled shed. Following the cessation of operations in 1967, rail services were discontinued on the section linking it to Sant Joan de les Abadesses. Of the original track infrastructure, only the trench remains today.
This station was a mandatory stop on the line that transported coal from the Ogassa and Surroca mines to Barcelona. In fact, it was at this station that the coal was loaded onto the train wagons: its three tracks were each fitted with a turntable for wagons and a tipper that allowed the ore to be emptied directly from the skips onto the train.
But coal was not the only product transported from Toralles: cement from Can Balaguer and Can Marteng, two companies based in the region, arrived via two different routes and was then loaded onto trains at two separate platforms at the station. Consequently, the trains departing from this iconic station carried coal to Barcelona in open wagons and cement in closed ones.
In 2017, Sant Joan de les Abadesses Council purchased the former railway site from ADIF. This space covers an area of more than 13,300 square metres.
