Sant Joan de les Abadesses former Station
The Sant Joan de les Abadesses railway station was built in the late 19th century to serve the railway line constructed in 1880. This railway line transported coal to Barcelona from the mines at Surroca and Ogassa, which had reserves of 35,000 tonnes a year: enough to supply the Catalan market.
The section linking Sant Joan de les Abadesses and Toralles operated until 1967, when operations ceased, while the Sant Joan de les Abadesses–Ripoll section remained in service until 1980.
Today, the former Sant Joan de les Abadesses railway station – which once comprised a passenger terminal, a goods warehouse and toilet facilities – has been transformed into the Parc de l’Estació, a revitalised space situated at the foot of the historic railway line and now repurposed. In fact, the former warehouse is now the ‘Ruta del Ferro’ hostel, which can accommodate 86 people and offers bike hire for exploring the Ferro i del Carbó Greenway Nature Trail.
The old passenger terminal now houses the La Ruta del Ferro restaurant, serving traditional fare with seating for 120 people.
