Shrine of Carrassumada

The Shrine of Carrassumada stands on a small hill overlooking the agricultural and natural landscape around Torres de Segre. Its prime location makes it one of the best vantage points overlooking the Utxesa reservoir and the Segre Valley, as well as being one of the sites of greatest historical and heritage value in the area.

Tradition traces the origins of the shrine back to the Middle Ages. The shrine we see today, dedicated to the Virgin of Carrassumada, has its origins in buildings erected between the 12th and 17th centuries, although the site had been occupied for much longer before that. Archaeological excavations have confirmed the existence of an Iberian settlement on the hill, which means this strategic site has been inhabited for over two thousand years. Many of the artefacts found are currently held in archaeological collections in Lleida.

The complex consists of the chapel and an adjoining old farmhouse. From an architectural point of view, it stands out for its simplicity, typical of traditional Catalan architecture. The church comprises a single nave with a rectangular floor plan, topped by a semicircular apse, while the farmhouse retains traditional architectural features linked to the area’s agricultural activity. The complex is listed as a Protected Local Cultural Heritage Site.

Carrassumada has also played an important role throughout its history. During the 19th century Carlist Wars, the shrine’s defensive walls were reinforced, and during the Spanish Civil War, the hill was used as an observation post due to the wide view it offered over the surrounding area. The bombing suffered during that conflict necessitated major restoration work in the decades that followed.

Today, the shrine remains a place much loved by locals and visitors alike. As well as its religious and historical interest, it offers a magnificent panoramic view of the Utxesa nature reserve, the farmlands of the Segrià and the gentle hills that characterise this part of the Ebro depression. The combination of heritage, archaeology, landscape and nature makes Carrassumada one of the most highly recommended places to visit in the area.
