Torres de Segre
The municipality of Torres de Segre is situated in the Segrià region, in the province of Lleida, on the banks of the River Segre and very close to the Utxesa reservoir, forming part of the landscape along the River Segre and Utxesa Reservoir Nature Trail. With a population of around 2,000, the municipality combines agricultural tradition, historical heritage and a natural environment closely linked to water and irrigation.
From its very beginnings, its history has been linked to the river and the fertile lands of the valley. Although the village is first documented in medieval times, there is evidence of earlier settlement linked to the use of the land for agriculture and livestock farming. Over the centuries, the municipality maintained close ties with the city of Lleida, particularly in the management of water, irrigation channels and irrigation systems, which were vital to the local economy. A key development was the construction of the Seròs Canal and the Utxesa reservoir between 1912 and 1914, infrastructure projects spearheaded by “La Canadenca” which profoundly transformed the landscape and fostered agricultural and energy development in the area.
The municipality’s economy continues to be based mainly on irrigated agriculture. Notable crops include sweet fruit — peaches, nectarines, pears and apples — as well as cereals and vegetables. Pig, sheep and poultry farming are also practised in the municipality, alongside small agri-food businesses linked to the agricultural sector.
As for cultural heritage, the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción stands out, as do various traditional buildings linked to irrigation and the vernacular architecture of the Segrià region. The municipality also preserves the historical memory linked to the river and to old crossing points, such as the historic ferry that used to cross the Segre before construction of the bridge in 1914.
The natural heritage is characterised by the presence of the River Segre and the wetlands around the Utxesa reservoir, an area of great ecological value and home to numerous species of waterbirds and migratory birds. Rural paths and riverside areas offer ideal scenery for walking, cycle touring and wildlife watching. Among the main celebrations are the Festa Major, which takes place at the end of July, and the Santa Bárbara festivals, in honour of the town’s patron saint, in early December. These festivals combine religious ceremonies, traditional activities and cultural events that strengthen the local community.
