River Noguera de Tor
The Noguera de Tor River rises in the Pre-Pyreness of Lleida, on the southern slope of Montardo Peak at an altitude of over 2,800 m. With a length of just 30 kilometres, it is the main tributary of the Noguera Ribagorzana. As it flows downstream, it crosses the Boí Valley, drawing water from lakes and small ravines.
The two main tributaries of the River Noguera de Tor are the Sant Nicolau, which rises in Aigüestortes, and the Sant Martí. Before flowing into the sea north of Pont de Suert, its waters are regulated by two reservoirs used for hydroelectric power generation: Cavallers reservoir, whose dam is situated in the municipality of La Val de Boí, and further on, the Llesp reservoir.
All along the Vall de Boí, the vegetation lining the riverbed consists of oak and pine trees, alongside lilies, snowdrops, arnica, marigolds and foxgloves. Birds such as bearded vultures, eagles, vultures and falcons, as well as foxes, roe deer and wildcats, inhabit the area, while the native trout found in its waters is particularly prized. Obviously, the area is a particularly popular for various types of fishing.
Near the estuary lies the Pont de Suert Wildlife Centre, founded in 1995. Although it was originally set up to protect otters, it is now a key centre for biodiversity in Catalonia. The centre leads breeding and reintroduction programmes for endangered species such as the European mink and the Montseny newt.
