El Pont de Suert
El Pont de Suert is the capital of the comarca of Alta Ribagorza, and its more than 20 villages are situated in a stunning location. In fact, it is its location that has shaped both its character and its economy, as the area still supports significant agricultural and livestock activity, complemented by the hydroelectric industry, which has not only boosted the local economy but also encouraged people to settle there. Also worth noting is the craft sector, which encompasses areas such as agri-food, textiles and fashion, and the arts.
The area around Pont de Suert enjoys a privileged location among vast valleys. From the Sant Gervàs mountain range to the peaks of the Pyrenees, the landscape alternates between holm oak woodlands and alpine pastures, alongside forests of oak, beech, fir and black pine. The flora includes such unique species as the king’s crown and the alpine rosella.
Its Romanesque and Baroque heritage is a major tourist attraction. Notable churches in the surrounding area include those of Santa Maria de Viu de Llevata, Sant Bartomeu d'Erta and Sant Climent d'Iran. In the town’s historic quarter, it is well worth taking a stroll around the Plaza Mayor, partially lined with arcades, and visiting iconic buildings like the Palacio Abacial and the Old Church dedicated to the Assumption.
Its cuisine is based on meat, dairy products and produce from the vegetable garden. Dishes like freginat (pork neck stew), palpís de cordero (lamb’s thighs), escudella de calabaza (pumpkin soup), artisan sausages and sheep’s cheeses are hallmarks of the local cuisine, not to mention coca de chicharrones (sweet pork lard tart), brossat (fresh cheese) and arrop (a concentrated grape syrup).
Summer and winter see two of El Pont de Suert’s main festivals: the main festival, which takes place in August, and the ‘small’ festival, in December. Alongside these, the Baixada de les Falles takes place on St John’s Eve; May and June have the pilgrimages to the Virgen de Mola and the Virgen del Remedio take place, respectively; and in October, the Girella fair is held, named after a traditional sausage.
