Puerto Escandón station
Puerto Escandón Station is located at kilometre point 150.2, in the municipality of Puebla de Valverde, province of Teruel, on the line between Zaragoza and Sagunto, at an altitude of over 1,200 metres. It was inaugurated on 3 November 1900 and its main function today is to serve the Media Distancia trains that run to the Norte station in Valencia and the city of Teruel.
Due to the fact that it is not located close to any town, its initial purpose was not so much for passenger transport, but rather to support the rail freight network. Despite this, there are a number of outstanding architectural elements in its surroundings. On the one hand, there is the old mining railway line that connected Puerto Escandón station with the Ojos Negros mine. This route no longer carries railway traffic, but had been reconditioned as a greenway for hikers and cyclists, and a number of original elements have been preserved. Also of historical significance is a path that leads to some Spanish Civil War trenches, which were used by both Republicans and Nationalists as a defensive position at different stages of the Battle of Teruel.
