San Roque hermitage
San Roque hermitage, which is located on the outskirts of the village of Manchones, is a small, simple, traditional building with a single, narrow nave on two levels, with a gabled roof.
Its exterior is rather sober, with walls with no openings painted entirely in white and lacking any kind of decoration, with a small arched doorway framed by a box painted dark blue.
Inside, the San Roque reredos stands out, which was gilded in 1765 for twenty-eight pounds paid for by the local residents.
The patron saint festivities in honour of the Virgen del Carmen and San Roque are held in mid-August and last five days, when locals and visitors enjoy open-air dances, traditional games and dinners, culminating in the feast of the saint on 16 August.
The day prior, it is a tradition to take a pilgrimage up to the hermitage by dancing from the village, and once there, to hold a mass that ends with a snack based on roscones (ring-shaped doughnuts), watermelon, melon and wine, which is provided by the prior. They also dance their way back to the village with the area’s traditional bolero.
