Old Candilichera station
In the early 20th century, a pioneering railway project was undertaken with the aim of linking the seaports of Santander and Valencia. Products and goods of the inland provinces would be given access to export by sea. In spite of the initial intentions, the Santander-Mediterranean railway would never be fully completed.
In 1930 the route between Cidade-Dosante and Calatayud was inaugurated. At that point, the works would be paralysed, among other reasons, due to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. After the war, plans to complete the line were revived in the province of Santander, but it was not to be and, in 1959, the project was definitively abandoned.
The Santander-Mediterráneo, also known as the Calatayud-Cidade Dosante line, was 367 kilometres long and provided passenger and freight transport services for 55 years. Over a dozen tunnels and forty bridges were built along the route, as well as thirty-two stations, sixteen sidings and nine halt stations.
The old Candilichera station belongs to the siding category. It is currently in a dilapidated state, and visitors are advised to take extreme caution. The remains still standing consist of a simple building with a gabled roof and a single storey, mainly used to serve passengers, and a small adjoining warehouse. Part of the platform has also been preserved.
