Chapel of San Saturio
The temple is located in the city of Soria at the foot of the River Duero. The strategic location of the building on a rocky promontory that crowns the riverbed, surrounded by a dense mass of woodland, has become one of the most representative images of this Castilian city. This enclave has long been a source of inspiration for renowned writers such as Antonio Machado and Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer. Soria and this remarkable chapel on the banks of the Duero provided them with a tranquil setting in which to compose some of their most celebrated works.
The town's tradition states that the saint to whom this chapel is dedicated was a Soria nobleman from the 4th century who distributed his wealth among the most disadvantaged and subsequently retired to live as a hermit in the caves located near the Duero. It was not until the 16th century that the remains of the saint were discovered, which led to a surge in devotion among the people of Soria towards the figure of this saint. This is the rationale behind the decision to commence construction of a temple in honour of San Saturio and to designate him as the city's patron saint.
Visitors can now explore the chapel and the surrounding area, which includes natural grottoes. The church, which has an octagonal floor plan, features frescoes depicting the history of San Saturio, as well as other elements of artistic interest, including an altarpiece of Baroque origin.
