Old pinar grande station
In the past, this building was part of the railway infrastructure of the line connecting Calatayud with Cidad Dosante (Burgos). This line was conceived as part of a wider connection intended to link the ports of Santander and Sagunto. The ambitious project took was first undertaken the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but was abandoned and definitively closed down in January 1985.
In 1920, the provincial councils of Burgos, Santander, Soria and Zaragoza supported the construction of the central sections of the Santander-Mediterranean railway. It would be in 1930 before the section between Calatayud and Cidad-Dosante (Burgos) was completed. However, the connection to Santander was never completed, with the final 35 km remaining incomplete.
As part of this section, different facilities and railway stations were built for the delivery of passengers and goods. At Pinar Grande station, this infrastructure was designed mainly for the transport and distribution of the timber produced in this area, one of the main economic engines of the region. The station once had a loading bay, as well as a crane that allowed goods to be loaded onto the trains.
Despite the importance that this station had for years for the surrounding municipalities, which allowed the distribution of their raw materials to the rest of the country, when the railway closed in 1985, the Pinar Grande station was abandoned, and is today only a ruined vestige of the once-thriving railway line that served the for years.
