Lobos river canyon (Shrine of San Bartolome)
The Lobos River Canyon Natural Park is a natural enclave that measures about 10,000 hectares spread between the provinces of Burgos and Soria.
The canyon is a spectacular natural feature, carved into the limestone rock over the years by the force of the waters of the Lobos River as it meanders throughout this landscape. The park is fully accessible, although some parts of the may have capacity limits to prevent overcrowding. It is also possible to find certain areas of the site closed as a precaution in those periods when the River Lobos is expected to experience significant flooding.
Without leaving the canyon, we can visit the Shrine of San Bartolomé, one of the main points of interest in this natural area. The extraordinary location of this temple, surrounded by pools full of water lilies and dragonflies, provides an idyllic picture in the middle of the wild nature. The 12th century Romanesque shrine has limited visiting hours. Every 24 August, it is the setting for the San Bartolomé pilgrimage, celebrated by the local residents.
The park boasts large colonies of griffon vultures. Visitors really immerse themselves in the park on the many hiking routes following the course the Lobos River through this unique and beautiful landscape. A landmark on many of these routes the Bridge of the Seven Arches, which is also one of the main access points to the park. This viaduct crosses the river bed in the heart of this Natural Park and a recreational area has been set up next to it.
