Old station of Hontoria del Pinar
This old railway building was part of the line linking Calatayud with Cidad Dosante, Burgos. This connection was conceived as part of a wider, more ambitious project to link the ports of Santander and Sagunto. Work on the line began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
In 1920, the provincial councils of Burgos, Santander, Soria and Zaragoza supported the construction of the central sections of the Santander-Mediterranean railway. Finally, in 1930, the section between Calatayud and Cidad-Dosante was completed. However, the connection to Santander was never completed, with the last 35 km of track never built. The completed section was in operation for several decades until the line was definitively closed on 1 January 1985, abandoning infrastructures such as this one to their fate.
However, in the case of the Hontoria del Pinar, also known as the Lobos River station, the building has been brought back to life thanks to its redevelopment as a hostel and rural retreat in 2011. Today the old station is equipped with 22 bunk beds, as well as several rooms that can accommodate between four and eight people, and an apartment located in what were once the station's toilets. Thanks to this reconversion, the old station of Hontoria del Pinar has become a tourist attraction in the area, which also offers activities like children’s camps horse riding, cycling routes and caving.
