Shrine of San Juan
This Romanesque shrine is located to the south of the Burgos municipality of Hontoria del Pinar, although it sits on a promontory somewhat removed from the town centre. It can be reached after crossing the Roman bridge and road that ascends the steep terrain on which the temple stands. Its surroundings offer an enviable panoramic view of the municipality.
Elements of the original Romanesque chapel still survive today, such as its semicircular arched doorway, dating back to the 11th century. However, the square-headed nave that makes up this church was built between the 17th and 18th centuries. The chancel is slightly higher than the rest of the nave of the shrine.
Inside, we can observe other elements of the original church, such as the two double Romanesque capitals that support the altar of the church featuring plant decorations so common in this style. The Shrine of San Juan’s 15th century altarpiece is another highlight.
Hontoria del Pinar also celebrated the popular festival of the bonfires of San Juan around this shrine, on the night of 23rd into the 24th of June.
