Peñalara
Peñalara is a great hanging syncline which, at 1,296 m high, remains an omnipresent observer of the entire valley of the Tierra de Lara, in the heart of the province of Burgos. The caves and cavities of this rugged environment were a refuge for the first human settlers who arrived here in prehistoric times. In the past, this hill served as a Celtiberian hill fort, although the Romans also passed through Peñalara during their dominion over the Peninsula, and it was at its foot that the village of Lara was founded, today Lara de los Infantes. Although there are several hiking routes that explore the surroundings of Peñalara, the truth is that it is only possible to access it from its extremities, due to the fact that its slopes drop steeply down to the plain surrounding this steep rocky outcrop. At the summit, where there is a trigonometrical station, and it offers enviable views of the entire Tierra de Lara area, set in a unique natural environment and home to numerous archaeological sites.
