Cuesta del rey
Promontory rising to an altitude of 955 metres, located between the N-623, BU-V-6278 and BU-V-6279 roads. It is part of a larger group of hills located between the rivers Villatoro and Ubierna. The closest population centre is Villarmero, which is also very close to the city of Burgos.
The landscape around the village is known as “Páramos calcáreos del norte de Burgos” (Calcareous moorlands of northern Burgos), defined as an Areas of Singular Ecological Value (ASVE, as per its Spanish acronym) according to the Sub-regional Planning Guidelines for the Urban Area of Burgos (DOABu).
It has no arboreal vegetation, being covered by small bushes. The immediate surroundings are dryland cereal crops and on the north-eastern side there are several telecommunications antennas.
However, the primary interest here is undoubtedly geological, as it is catalogued as a Site of Geological Interest (LIG) known as “Yacimiento de Vertebrados de Cuesta del Rey” (the Cuesta del Rey Vertebrate Deposit) (DU027), where various remains of micromammals dating from the end of the Aragonian period have been found.
