Monastery of Fresdelval
This monument is a listed Protected Cultural Heritage site and is hidden in a small valley between the villages of Villatoro and Quintanilla Vivar, very close to the city of Burgos. Its current appearance dates from the 15th century, when it was built by order of the Adelantado Mayor of Castile, Gómez Manrique, and occupied by the Hieronymite monks.
Its current appearance corresponds to that of its original building, of which the external walls of the old church are also preserved, as well as the two-storey main cloister and other monastic outbuildings. The 16th century saw a number of alterations and annexes carried out, such as the Renaissance palace and the Padilla courtyard. For years it served as the occasional residence of King Charles V, but in the 19th century he was evicted and saw his assets confiscated. It is now a privately owned monument that can be visited one day a month when arranged in advance.
