Riverside forest
Also known as gallery or riparian forests, these are plant formations with a variety of specific flora and fauna, constituting an ecosystem of great value, especially in areas with dry climates like on the Iberian Peninsula. It is characterised by the fact that it extends along both riverbeds, on land which, at a certain depth, is soaked with water. Different vegetation barriers usually appear, which vary according to the conditions of the terrain, with an initial strip of small species such as grass and some shrub species, which are able to withstand periodic water level rises and soils with a high percentage of water.
As the river bed advances, the grasses and small bushes are replaced by other larger species, at first with small trees that have adapted well to soils with a high water table, such as those of the willow family, and gradually less tolerant species, but which still need the high humidity of by this environment, such as those of the ash family.
In this case, the riverside woodland is established around the course of the River Homino, offering routes close to the municipality of Salas de Bureba, such as the "Riberas del río Homino" or the "Arroyo de los Molinos", which runs along one of its tributaries and offers walkers the possibility of getting to know a natural environment of impressive beauty up close.
