River Nela
The river Nela is one of the most beautiful riverbanks in the province of Burgos. It has its source in the vicinity of Busnela, in the Somo mountains, in the municipality of Merindad de Valdeporres.
From its source, it runs for about 75 kilometres, crossing beautiful villages such as Puentedey, before flowing into the river Ebro, very close to the town of Trespaderne in Burgos. With a catchment area of 1081.20 km2 and an average flow of 16.70 3 m/s, it is the main river collector in Las Merindades.
Its flow is destined to supply the towns in its basin, the main ones being Villarcayo, Medina de Pomar and its districts. There are also some fish farms in the towns of Busnela and Pedrosa de Valdeporres.
The river Nela has several tributaries, among which the streams of Brenín, Corbatos and Cortemoro, Cogullos, Trancos and Molino, as well as that of Gorrión can be seen on the left. As for the rivers, Engaña, Trema and Trueba stand out.
The river basin is home to different species of fauna including birds such as redstarts or kingfishers and mammals such as bats, Iberian desmans or otters.
As for vegetation, at some points, especially the most winding parts of the river, quite extensive riverside forests remain.
