Chapel of San Roque
The chapel of San Roque is situated in the municipality of Roa, Burgos, on the banks of the Duero River, near the bridge that connects to the town and Aranda de Duero.
The Baroque temple, constructed in the 18th century, is dedicated to the patron saint of the town.
According to the records, the current chapel was constructed on the site of an earlier church, which was originally built in the 16th century and was dedicated to San Roque. However, due to the inadequate maintenance of the old chapel, built in adobe in 1753, work began on the new church, which still stands today.
The building is constructed from masonry and comprises a single nave with a rectangular floor plan and a hipped roof. The façade is embellished with several buttresses.
The façade is notable for its coat of arms of Roa and image of San Roque. The structure is constructed from ashlar and comprises a semicircular arch and a split pediment, crowned by a belfry in the Baroque style. The belfry houses a single bell and several pinnacles that serve as decoration. The entire project is completed in a goldsmith's cross that is situated above the entrance to the church.
The image of San Roque is kept inside the sacristy and at the head of the chapel. It takes centre stage during the patron saint festivities of Roa, held on 14 August.
