Virgen de la Vega chapel
The Virgen de la Vega chapel is situated on the outskirts of the municipality of Castrillo de la Vega in Burgos, between the Canal de Guma, the Valpedrizo stream and the Duero riverbed.
This temple, dedicated to the patron saint of Castrillo de la Vega, is a masonry structure with a single rectangular nave and a gabled roof.
The façade is unmistakably Baroque in style, featuring a lintelled arch above which sits a simple oculus. The structure reaches its pinnacle with a small belfry, featuring a single opening, surrounded by several pinnacles that serve as ornamentation, and culminating in a large stone cross with a robust and imposing appearance.
Although the exact year of construction is unknown, the style of the façade suggests that the chapel was built in the 18th century. However, its current appearance corresponds to the various remodelling works carried out in 2008.
Furthermore, on the Monday following Easter Sunday, the pilgrimage of the patron saint festivities of Castrillo de la Vega is held in this church. During this event, the image of the Virgen de la Vega is carried from the chapel to the local church.
