The municipality of Berlangas de Roa is in the province of Burgos, in the region known as Comarca de la Ribera del Duero.
The municipality's name is derived from the first settlements in the area, which were likely established by the men of Santa María de Valeria de Berlangas, also known as Valeramica.
The municipality of Berlangas currently has a single population centre. However, until the 20th century, it also had a second population centre, known as El Carrascal. The area is currently being used as a private hunting reserve, which has resulted in a significant reduction in the local population.
The town's history begins with the Christian conquest of the lands of the Duero by troops from the north.
In 1143, King Alfonso VII of León established the Community of Villa y Tierra de Rosa, which included the municipality of Berlangas. This community was also part of the Crown of Castile.
The town's monuments include the Parish Church of San Andrés, a Baroque-style structure built in the 17th century. Its exterior features a bell tower and various buttresses that adorn the façade. The interior of the church features an important main altarpiece dating from the 16th century and a beautiful 15th-century tenebrarium.
The 12th-century Romanesque chapel of the Virgen de Los Hueros, located on the outskirts of the municipality, is also worthy of a visit.
The municipality boasts several notable architectural landmarks, including the town hall and the old washing places of the town. It features several impressive ancestral homes with imposing stone or brick façades, as well as adobe houses that are scattered throughout the municipality.
The natural environment of Berlangas is characterised by the confluence of the rivers Riaza and Gormejon in the river Duero, as well as by the existence of numerous natural springs and fountains, such as the Fuente del Riaza or the Fuente de Los Caños, which irrigate the town.
The festivities in honour of the Virgen de Los Huertos, the patron saint, take place on 23 April. The festivities in honour of San Andrés Apóstol, patron saint of the town, are held on 30 November.
Furthermore, it is customary to celebrate Los Quintos, a date on which young men used to embark on their military service, between 31 December and 1 January. This tradition has been preserved as a festival. There is also the celebration of Santa Águeda on 5 February, which marks the making of the traditional "bolillas de Santa Águeda,”.
