Castrillo de la Vega
Castrillo de la Vega is a municipality in the province of Burgos, located 88 km from the capital of Burgos, in the region known as Comarca de la Ribera del Duero.
The town's origins date back to the conquest of the Aza square in 912 by Don Gonzalo Fernandez, at that time Count of Lara and predecessor of Fernán González, the count who would go on to unify the territories of the former Crown of Castile into a single county.
From the time of the Christian conquest, this area was consolidated as a bastion of defence of the Castilian-Christian lands against Arab offensives, acting as a shield against the banks of the Duero River.
Following the establishment of a new administrative regime in Castile, Castrillo de la Vega became part of the former Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Aza and was placed under the lordship of the Count of Miranda.
The town's religious monuments include the Parish Church of Santiago Apóstol or Santiago el Mayor, which belongs to the archdiocese of Burgos. The building is a Romanesque structure that has undergone modifications in the 18th century. It comprises a nave with a Latin cross floor plan, within which altarpieces of significant historical value and other relics are stored. As well as the chapel of the Virgen de la Vega.
The municipality boasts several historical sites, including the remains of the old medieval bridge of San Roque and the Torre del Monte, also known as the Atalaya del Montecillo. This structure formed part of the crenellated fortress of Castrillo.
One of the most striking aspects of this town is the remarkable diversity of traditional wineries that can be found here. The municipality's geographical location and proximity to the Duero riverbed have enabled the cultivation of extensive plantations and vineyards.
As for festivities, the first weekend after Easter is the festival in honour of the Virgen de la Vega, patron saint of the town. Furthermore, the celebrations in honour of St. James the Apostle are held on 25 July, while on 15 and 16 August, the festivities of St. Roque and St. Anne take place.
The municipality's most outstanding celebration is the grape harvest festival, held in the summer months. This is a traditional celebration in the area, where attendees can enjoy the products and wines of the wineries surrounding the town.
