Onón
Onón (Ounón in Asturian language) is a parish in the council of Cangas de Narcea. Nestled in a valley, the village gives its name to the river meandering through the hills adorned with houses and ornamental paneras (granaries on stilts). Although it once thrived with agricultural and livestock activities, the area has experienced a decline in population over the past few decades, mirroring the widespread depopulation of mountainous regions.
In 1920, the village boasted its own school, a generous gift from Marcelino Peláez Barreiro, a native of Onón who sought opportunities in Argentina. Upon his return, having achieved success abroad, Peláez dedicated a portion of his earnings altruistically to his hometown.
Deep within the valley's southern end and surrounded by radiata pine (Pinus radiata) plantations, stands the 18th-century church of Saint Julian, mentioned in 10th-century texts, hinting at an earlier chapel lost to time. Adjacent to the church are abandoned paneras (typical graneries) of significant ornamental value, now reclaimed by nature. This stark image contrasts with the Onón of yesteryear, where traditional farmhouses and horreo-like granaries adorned the landscape.
