San Martín de Sierra
San Martín de Sierra (Samartín de Sierra in Asturian), located in the council of Cangas de Narcea, is a parish with its own legal status that oversees the administration of various villages and places, including Llamas del Mouro, Bruelles, and Tandes. Despite its administrative role, San Martín de Sierra itself has a small population, with only six residents, while the entire parish is home to about 140 people. Bruelles, within the parish, houses the Santarbás public school and serves as a polling station during elections.
San Martín de Sierra comprises barely a dozen buildings, featuring well-preserved paneras (granaries on stilts) that are over 200 years old. The church of San Martín de Sierra, situated near the parish cemetery at the entrance to the village from the Bruelles road, is a modern construction with a rectangular floor plan, a canopied façade, and a small bell tower set transversally between the landing and the main nave. While the church has a whitewashed appearance similar to other structures built in the last century in the Asturian interior, it has some older elements, including a stone font and a cross from the original church, whose ruins and façade still remain near the current temple.
As a parish, San Martín de Sierra celebrates its patron saint, Saint Martin, every 28 August. The festivities include a mass dedicated to the saint, followed by a day of celebration featuring a midday vermouth session and an evening verbena with dancing in the Campo Santarbás de Bruelles.
