Alto del Gamoniteiro
The Alto del Gamoniteiro is the highest mountain pass in Asturias, reaching 1791 m above sea level. The ascent to Gamoniteiro is undertaken from the pass of La Cobertoria, via the AS-230 road that links Pola de Lena with Bárzana.
The ascent to Gamoniteiro was asphalted so that Spanish Radio and Television Corporation (RTVE) aerials and repeaters could be installed when they were inaugurated in 1964. The location was perfect for these devices as it was a high altitude and in the centre of the province of Asturias.
The Alto de Gamoniteiro is a rite of passage among hardcore cycling enthusiasts. With a distance of 15.11 km and an average gradient of almost 10%, some stretches exceed 15% and even reach 17% in the final kilometre.
From May to October, the section is accessible, however, in the winter season there are usually restrictions on traffic due to adverse weather conditions.
