Río Camaces River
The Puente del Ojo bridge is a small structure that spans the Camaces river to the northeast of the town of Hinojosa de Duero, in the vicinity of the SA-330 road.
This bridge represents a fine example of architectural design, having facilitated the crossing of these challenging waters since the medieval period. The structure is now integrated into the surrounding landscape, and its presence attracts the attention of passers-by who discover this attractive location within the Arribes del Duero Natural Park.
The construction of this bridge over the River Camaces at that time presented a significant challenge. To achieve this, they employed a meticulous masonry technique using local granite stone, in addition to a semicircular arched soffit, which served to span the watercourse.
There are apertures on the lateral surfaces that would permit the passage of water in the event of an overflow. The design is a consequence of the heterogeneous terrain and slope conditions. In this manner, the granite deck of the bridge remains elevated above the bedrock, thus allowing the two banks to be joined. This avoids any differences in height and ensures that the bridge remains at a sufficient height for the river to flow freely.
The Puente del Ojo is in equilibrium with the granite landscape, which is populated by holm oaks, ash trees, broom and broom. The use of local raw materials in the construction of the bridge ensures that it appears to be an integral part of the surrounding natural environment.
The Arribes de Duero region is notable for its abundance of impressive waterfalls, narrow canyon systems of significant hydrological, geological and scenic value, as well as riverbeds of polished stone resulting from the erosion of the water. The site of the bridge is a fine example of this distinctive feature of the region and represents an ideal vantage point from which to appreciate the various elements.
