Pinilla de Fermoselle
In the northern region of the Arribes de Duero Natural Park, situated approximately 10 kilometres from Fermoselle, the small town of Pinilla de Fermoselle in Zamora can be found.
This hill has been inhabited since the prehistoric period, with the inhabitants taking advantage of the cliffs, which served as a natural barrier. The area contains evidence of a pre-Roman castro and of medieval settlements, including ceramic remains and the remains of curved tiles. These were deposited in the area in 1205, when the Leonese king Alfonso IX gave the entire town of Fernoselle, where Pinilla was located, to the bishop of Zamora.
The humble Chapel of San Miguel is located 1 km from the centre of Pinilla de Fermoselle. It is believed to have been constructed between the 11th and 14th centuries and is associated with a Romanesque style due to the prominent belfry at the top and the round-arched window below it.
However, the main ecclesiastical building in the town can be visited in the town centre, the Church of Our Lady of Carrasco. The building was constructed in the 13th century in the Romanesque architectural style. The construction of the building was completed using masonry and local granite masonry, with a single nave divided into three sections. The Romanesque style is characterised by a distinctive façade, which is regarded as a hallmark of the late Romanesque period. The church has undergone reconstructions, maintaining architectural elements of interest such as the triumphal arch from 1705 or the belfry that crowns the church in the Sayago style.
The locality boasts a plethora of intriguing assets, which are dispersed throughout the village. One of the sites is the remains of huts near the Chapel of San Miguel, which were used to control the smuggling of tobacco, wool, coffee, soap and other goods that came across the Duero River from Portugal.
The local fountains and the locally manufactured granite laminate material used to build the shepherd's huts and the farmhouse have been preserved as part of the area's cultural heritage and traditional activity. Pinilla de Fermoselle has a rich cultural heritage, including the Sayago speech. This is a variation of the Leonese speech that is typical of the region of Sayago.
For those seeking the best views of this magnificent landscape, the Cura viewpoint is widely regarded as the optimal location. The elevated position of the property on the hillsides offers unparalleled views of the meander of the Duero River and the surrounding area, which is characterised by dense hillsides where holm oaks, junipers and olive trees mingle.
Pinilla de Fermoselle holds festivities in honour of San Miguel on the weekend closest to 8 May. The celebrations commence with a procession to the rhythm of the drummers. The Feast of Our Lady of Carrasco is also celebrated on the weekend of 8 September.
