Villaralbo
Villaralbo is a district of the city of Zamora, situated approximately 7 km from the historic centre of the latter. Despite its proximity to the capital, the town is renowned for its vibrant Easter celebrations, its rich historical heritage, and the exquisite Romanesque church located within its boundaries.
The banks of the Duero have been utilised since antiquity for the establishment of settlements. In the case of Villaralbo, archaeological evidence indicates that the area was occupied since the Copper Age, specifically between 1700 and 1000 BC. The remains are in a cut in the river, which has led to the area being designated as El Juncal. This designation has been attributed to the presence of ceramic remains and other fragments, as well as the identification of a primary burial site.
A Roman settlement has also been identified in the vicinity of the Canal de San José, based on the remains of buildings and other significant archaeological discoveries. Furthermore, documentary evidence indicates the existence of another village in the same area as Villaralbo, namely San Lorenzo el Soto. This village was depopulated at some point in the past.
The village of Villaralbo was first mentioned in 1116, when Doña Urraca donated the lands to the Order of San Juan. At this juncture, construction commenced on one of the town's most significant edifices, the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady. The church was constructed in the 12th century in the Romanesque architectural style and has undergone subsequent modifications and alterations over the centuries. The church comprises a single nave and an impressive architectural ensemble, comprising a tower with four sections and a large belfry topped by a cross. The exterior of the edifice is characterised by robust buttresses, a large presbytery and a splendid Romanesque doorway. The interior of the church is notable for its elaborate baroque altarpiece, several side chapels and vaulted ceilings.
Villaralbo is a municipality that celebrates several festivals throughout the year. These include Santa Rita on 22 May, San Idelfonso on 23 January, Santa Águeda, Carnival and others. Nevertheless, if there are any festivals that are experienced with fervour within the municipality, it is Easter Week. During this period, the four brotherhoods of the town, the musical bands and the neighbours collectively engage in processions to honour their patron saints and divinities.
