Moraleja del Vino
Moraleja del Vino is a sizable municipality situated 9 km from the capital of Zamora. The town's economy has been bolstered by the production of wines and liqueurs, as evidenced by “vino” in its name, which in Spanish means wine.
The 19km² area encompasses a multitude of archaeological sites, which collectively attest to the long history of the village. The municipality is situated to the south of a considerable number of archaeological sites, some of which are particularly ancient, dating back to the Lower Palaeolithic period. The sites contain a plethora of building materials and pottery from the Roman era, which were unearthed by farmers while tilling the soil for agricultural purposes.
Moraleja del Vino has the privilege of preserving and enjoying the Church of Santa María Magdalena, situated in the village's central area. The church is a substantial edifice of Renaissance style, constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries. The construction's most notable features are its toral arches, which support the dome that rises inside, and the grandiose baroque altarpieces. Collectively, these elements contribute to the building's majestic character. The portico and the arch that surrounds it are also notable for their imposing scale, as is the tower that is displayed on the outside and accompanies the tall belfry. The sacristy contains a figure of San José de Magdalena that was added to the altarpiece, as well as two other side altarpieces, two cornucopias and two chasubles embroidered in the 15th century.
It is pertinent to note that Moraleja del Vino is the birthplace of the celebrated sculptor Eduardo Barrón González, the creator of the Viriato monument, which is currently on display in the city of Zamora. It is also worthy of note that this village attained a significant degree of importance because of the production of grape derivatives. Furthermore, in 1873, the inaugural public library in the entire province was inaugurated in the town. He currently resides on the first floor of the Town Hall. Similarly, the architectural design of the hamlet of Moraleja del Vino exemplifies the village's reputation, featuring stately residences harmoniously integrated with traditional dwellings constructed from adobe materials.
The festivities in honour of Santa María Magdalena are celebrated between the 22 and 25 July. During this period, a wide variety of activities and shows are held in the village, including peñas, exhibitions, music, tournaments, children's games and parades, as well as holy masses.
