Villamarciel
Villamarciel is a hamlet belonging to the municipality of Tordesillas in the province of Valladolid, 22 km southwest of the provincial capital.
The town is situated between several productive agricultural areas, including the Vega de Aniago and the Vega de Villamarciel, which are fed by the Duero river.
The area's history can be traced back to Roman times, as evidenced by the various remains of ancient towns and settlements located in the Vega de Aniago. During the Roman Empire, Villamarciel was used as a route for Roman troops in their conflict with the Vacceans.
During the Middle Ages, this district was part of the Merindad del Infantazgo de Valladolid, an administrative division of the Crown of Castile.
Furthermore, there are sources that indicate the town participated in the Battle of Simancas in 939. This participation is scheduled to take place in the town on 5 August, during the festivities of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves.
The village of Villamarciel was sold on several occasions between 1559 and 1656.
The village enjoyed a period of prosperity in the 19th century, when around 1808 part of the Napoleonic troops settled in the village. Unfortunately, this resulted in looting and intimidation of the local population, who subsequently left the hamlet. During the Spanish War of Independence, French troops occupied the Parish Church, which was subsequently converted into barracks.
The village's monuments include the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, originally built in the 14th century. Only the tower remains of this ancient church.
The current building was constructed in the 20th century and is a single-nave church with a Latin cross floor plan, transept and gable roof. The building is constructed from brick with an ashlar base. It features a doorway with a lintelled arch and a flat profile, crowned by two pinnacles.
The village also offers the opportunity to visit a medieval fountain, medieval salt pans and early 20th century wash houses.
The patron saint festivities in honour of San Felipe and Santiago are held from 1 to 3 May. On 5 August, the patron saint festivities of Nuestra Señora Virgen de las Nieves take place.
