Río Adaja
The Adaja river is a watercourse belonging to the Duero River Basin. It flows through the provinces of Ávila, Segovia and Valladolid until it flows into the Duero river at Villanueva de Duero, in Valladolid.
The river rises between La Serrota and the Sierra de Ávila, in the Amblés Valley, receiving its waters from several streams, including the Prado Cimero stream, the Majada Verde stream, the Hornillos stream, the Sauceda stream and the Nogales stream. This spring is located in the Fuente Berroqueña or Fuente del Ortigal area of the municipality of Villatoro in Ávila.
The river collects the waters of the following rivers along its course: Hija, Blasco, Paradillo, Picuezo, Arevalillo, Chico, Fortes, Ullaque and Eresma. The river flows into the Duero River after 176 km.
The river has a rain-snow regime, with a higher flow during the thaw and rainy season and a low flow throughout the summer. Furthermore, the banks of the Adaja are listed as a Site of Community Interest and a Special Area of Conservation within the Natura 2000 Network.
The riverbed is characterised by typical riverside vegetation, including broom myrtle (Cytisus scoparius), mountain myrtle (Cytisus oromediterraneus) and Genista scorpius. As well as ash (Fraxinus angustifolia), ash willow (Salix atrocinerea), black poplar (Populus nigra) and alder(Alnus glutinosa). Species that are intermingled with Pyrenean honey (Quercus pirenaica), hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) and wild rose (Rosa stellata). While its waters are populated with water buttercup (Ranunculus peltatus), water marigold (Caltha palustris) or "devil's celery" (Oenanthe crocata).
The area beyond the river's course comprises extensive plains. The land is used for agricultural purposes, with crops such as cereals and livestock.
As for the fauna, its waters are populated with lamprey (Cobitis calderoni), bermejuela (Achondrostoma arcasii), Duero bogue (Pseudochondrostoma duriense) or calandino (Squalius alburnoides).
