Pintia Archaeological Site
The well-known archaeological complex of Pintia, one of the most important in Castilla y León, is situated on the left bank of the Duero River, between the municipalities of Pesquera and Padilla de Duero.
The site covers approximately 125 hectares and has been inhabited for more than a thousand years, with most of the area being home to the Vacceo, Roman and Visigothic peoples.
The site comprises three distinct areas: the city of Las Quintanillas, which was destroyed by fire; the necropolis of Las Ruedas, which is notable for its tombs of women, warriors and children; and the potter's quarter of Carralaceña. The last nucleus is situated on the opposite side of the river to ensure the safety of the local population in the event of an accident during the firing process of the ceramic pieces. It is worth noting that in this area, furnaces have been discovered which are unique in Europe due to the time of their construction and their size. The neighbourhood also boasts its own necropolis.
The Vacceans were a Celtic people who originated from northern Europe and settled in the Duero Valley, establishing several cities that operated independently and evolved into city-states. The Vaccean cities were constructed from adobe and their inhabitants were primarily engaged in cereal farming and vineyards, given their high consumption of wine.
