Izana River
The Izana River flows through the province of Soria via the towns of Las Cuevas, Quintana Redonda, Tardelcuende and Matamala de Almazán until it finally flows into the Duero, northwest of Ciadueña.
Some historians believe that the name of this river has pre-Roman origins, although it is thought to have Basque roots. Its meaning is thought to be related to water, although the exact interpretation is unclear.
The source of this watercourse is in the village of Villaciervos. However, many people believe that Villabuena is the source of the river, as it is at this point that it receives the greatest amount of water.
The river in question has historically been of vital importance to the municipalities through which it flows. Its waters have been used to supply water to the towns and nearby fields, as well as to power a variety of machinery used by man.
The villages of Las Cuevas, Quintana Redonda, Tardelcuende and Matamala are situated on both sides of this watercourse, which is part of the Duero river basin.
The Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar, written by Pascual Madoz between 1845 and 1850, contains a description of this watercourse. The publication indicates that the river was initially of a low flow, traversing Las Cuevas before joining another stream. The river crossed a stone bridge and served two flour mills before reaching Llamosos, where it then proceeded to Quintana Redonda. It was used to power two additional mills and a cut-off saw, before reaching Osonilla, where it was employed to power a new saw. In Tardelcuende, there was a stone bridge that could be crossed. The river then reached Matamala de Almazán, where a wooden bridge was constructed and used by a mill and a sawmill. Finally, the river's waters merge with the Duero to the northwest of Ciadueña.
