Campillo de Buitrago Reserveoir
Mount Valonsadero is situated a mere 8 km from Soria. The area encompasses approximately 2,800 hectares and boasts a diverse range of flora and fauna typical of the province. The entire area has been designated as a Natural Recreation Area since 2005.
The most prevalent species are undoubtedly the gall oak and the oak, which collectively form expansive forests used for firewood. However, it is also possible to find birch, ash, and even willow trees. It is also worth noting the distinctive appearance of the pastures of centenary oaks.
Additionally, the park features various grazing areas and sheltered areas beneath rocks, where visitors can observe a diverse range of flora, including violets, ponies, orchids, and anemones, which flourish amidst a variety of shrubs.
The forest is renowned for its rich mycological biodiversity, including chanterelles, migueles, oronjas, and truffles. These fungi play a vital role in the forest ecosystem, providing plants with water and nutrients while also preventing soil diseases. In addition to this work, they provide sustenance for the area's fauna, which includes roe deer, deer, wild boar, otters and different types of rodents. They also support the local livestock industry, which grazes on these lands.
The Valonsadero forest is undoubtedly the most important biodiversity site in the province of Soria. Furthermore, the area's geological significance is enhanced by the presence of ancient limestone rocks, located near the Duero River, and light-coloured sandstone rocks. Both materials have been of significance since the former has been used as a drainage and concrete-making material, while the latter has long been used for the construction of civil and religious buildings.
Additionally, the area boasts a rich history of cave paintings, with examples dating back to 3,000 and 2,000 BC.
Annually, a considerable number of locals and visitors from the capital of Soria converge on the meadows of Mount Valonsadero to participate in the festival of San Juan at the end of June. For over two decades, the Cross International Soria has been one of the most significant cross-country competitions in our country. Held here, it attracts runners from around the globe, competing in this natural setting.
The site also has a centre, which provides visitors with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the natural environment surrounding the city of Soria. Additionally, a cycle lane has been constructed, allowing those who prefer to explore this environment by pedalling to do so in a comfort.
