Municipality
Salduero
The municipality of Salduero is situated in the Soria region of Pinares.
The former royal estate is situated at an altitude of 1,000 metres and covers an area of 300 hectares. As with other villages in the area, the natural environment of this village is characterised by extensive areas of pine and oak trees, which provide shelter for a variety of species, including deer, roe deer, foxes and squirrels.
The municipality's principal buildings are of a religious nature, with the most significant being the church dedicated to San Juan Bautista, which was completed in 1733. The property also boasts a Gothic chapel and several Rococo altarpieces, as well as 18th-century silverware.
The village boasts two hermitages. The Santo Cristo monument is situated on the road from Salduero to the neighbouring village of Molinos de Duero. It is constructed from ashlar stones and includes the chapel of Santa Elena. The latter, located 3 km from the village, is a modern construction situated on Monte Dehesa Comunera.
The patron saint festivities in honour of San Juan Bautista take place on 24 June. During this period, a mass is held in which the local community performs coplillas (traditional songs) and the young women of the municipality present a floral tribute to the saint. The Virgen de las Nieves is celebrated on the 5th of August, with open-air dances forming a key part of the celebrations.
One of the most intriguing events in this town is the Luces del Duero (Duero Lights). This event takes place on the Saturday closest to the night of San Juan (23 June). Over 3,000 candles are distributed and used to illuminate the banks of the Duero River and the streets of the town.
