River Triguera
The River Triguera is a significant tributary of the River Duero. The source of the river is in the Sierra de los Picos de Urbión, in the municipality of Nelia, in Burgos.
The river runs for approximately 8.3 km through the provinces of Burgos and Soria, before flowing into the Duero River just a few metres from the municipality of Duruelo de la Sierra.
The Alto Duero River Nature Reserve is protected due to the unalterability of its natural characteristics (except for the presence of several longitudinal obstacles).
The river flows through an area of pine forest that occasionally dries out due to the rain-snow regime that characterises both the river Triguera and the river Duero. This frequently causes overflows.
One of the most significant pressures on the river Triguera is the impact of livestock in the riverside areas. This has led to erosion on the riverbank and hinders the correct development of the riverside woodland.
The river's typical characteristics of a high mountain river allow the presence of species such as trout, which makes it an excellent location for sustainable fishing tourism and similar activities. These practices, however, are prohibited from their source until just over 5 km downstream, where they join the Covagrande stream, which flows 2 km before it passes through Duruelo de la Sierra.
