River Esla
It is one of the most important rivers in northwest Spain and, moreover, the Duero's largest tributary. Its source is located in the Cantabrian Mountains, specifically in the Valdosín Valley natural area, on the border between León and Asturias.
The Esla River is over 287 km long and flows from north to south through the provinces of León and Zamora. The Romans who inhabited Hispania called it Astura; in fact, it is from this river that the Asturians derive the name of their region, which in Roman times extended across much of what is now the province of León.
