River Catoira
The River Catoira is a waterway that flows through the centre of the town sharing its name. Its origin lies in the union of the River Beco and the Casiero stream, on the slopes of Monte Xiabre, at the very point where this route ends.
As one of the final tributaries of the River Ulla, its waters play a significant role in maintaining the quality of the Ulla-Deza Fluvial System Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA).
Historically, this river has been a source of energy for hydraulic mills. Up to 45 mills in various states of conservation can be found along its banks, witnesses to its industrial and ethnographic legacy. Its banks also harbour rich riparian flora, offering a shady and pleasant route for those walking beside the river.
At its mouth lies the area's only tide mill, a singular construction valuing the sustainable use of water resources throughout history.
