Pas Greenway Nature Trail
Description
select a stage:

This Nature Trail corresponds to several sections of the old Astillero – Ontaneda railway line, 35 kilometers long, which was in service from 1902 to 1978. It was built with the idea of linking Santander, Burgos and Madrid, as an alternative to the Santander-Alar del Rey railway.
In its beginning, it favored the rise of tourism by transporting travelers to the spas of Puente Viesgo and Alceda. Later, the line acquired a more industrial character as mining in the area developed. It also contributed to the development of the region's fair activity since it combined the transportation of passengers with that of livestock.
The lack of profitability caused the progressive closure of several sections, until the definitive closure of the line.
This Path crosses different landscapes such as the urban environments of Astillero and La Penilla, crop fields, large meadows of livestock pastures, riverside areas of the River Pisueña and the Suscuaja stream, dotted with oaks, hazelnuts, thorn trees, beeches and holly trees.
