Darnius-Boadella Dam
The Darnius Boadella dam forms part of the Catalan Water Plan. It is situated in the Girona municipality of Darnius and was built in 1969 to control flooding on the River Muga, generate hydroelectric power and supply water to the region.
The dam, which was built using cement from Romania and Poland due to a shortage on the Spanish market, is 63 m high and 250 m wide at its crest, has a capacity of 60 hm3 and covers an area of 363 ha. The gravity dam also has a spillway with a capacity of 748 m3/s and a discharge channel with a capacity of 85 m3/s.
The structure, originally planned for the municipality of Boadella, was built in Darnius for technical reasons, and although the reservoir’s waters extend across the municipalities of Darnius, Sant Llorenç de la Muga, Terrades and Maçanet de Cabrenys – and not Boadella – it was in 2015 that the decision was taken to include both names in its title: Darnius-Boadella.
The views from the Darnius-Boadella dam are spectacular: it is well worth stopping to admire the vast expanse of water which, depending on the light, shifts in colour from shades of sky blue to dark blue. There are also various viewpoints near the bridge, offering spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding area, which is of great natural and scenic value.
