L' Agulla park
The Parc de l’Agulla is one of Manresa’s most iconic sites and the final stop on the historical tour of the Manresa Canal. Opened in 1974, this large peri-urban park combines hydraulic heritage, nature and leisure in a setting of great scenic beauty. Its most distinctive feature is the large Agulla reservoir, an artificial reservoir covering more than 200,000 square metres into which the water carried by the Canal flows after travelling nearly 26 kilometres from the River Llobregat.
The original purpose of this large body of water was to ensure the storage and distribution of water for urban supply, irrigation and various industrial uses. Although water supply systems have evolved today, the reservoir continues to play an important regulatory role within the region’s water network.
The park has also become one of Manresa’s main recreational areas. Footpaths, wooded areas, rest areas and viewpoints allow visitors to explore the perimeter of the reservoir at their leisure and enjoy the views over the water and the Bages countryside. The presence of waterbirds and vegetation typical of wetland habitats also lends the site considerable natural interest.
Next to the reservoir is the Parc de la Séquia, home to the headquarters of the Fundació Aigües de Manresa – Junta de la Séquia and the Canal Visitors' Centre. This facility provides an insight into the history of medieval water infrastructure, its construction and operation, and its enormous importance for the development of Manresa and the entire region. Through exhibitions, audiovisual resources and educational activities, visitors can gain an understanding of how a project that began in the 14th century continues to form part of everyday life in the region.
The Parc de l’Agulla represents the culmination of one of Catalonia’s most important water engineering projects and a place where history, water, nature and leisure coexist in perfect harmony.
