Albentosa
Albentosa is a municipality and village located in the comarca of Gúdar-Javalambre. It has a population of around 267 inhabitants, and has its roots in settlements dating back to before the Iberian period, confirmed by the archaeological sites found in the vicinity. Albentosa was occupied by the Romans, with traces remaining in the form of Roman roads. With the arrival of the Moors to the Iberian Peninsula, it remained an important settlement. Its strategic geographical location mean it was the site of constant clashes between the Moors and Christians. Because of its location, halfway between the Levant and the lands of Aragon, the area saw many battles in the different wars fought throughout Spain’s, such as the Carlist Wars or the War of Independence, when much of the area was destroyed. It is also where the Real Cofradía de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles was founded in the 12th or 13th century. James I the Conqueror was a member of this Confraternity, one of the oldest in Teruel.
As for the architecture of Albentosa, it has religious buildings like the gothic renaissance Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, built in masonry and ashlar; the Shrine of Fuen del Cepo, a simple construction with a single nave built in whitewashed masonry and the Shrine of Cueva Santa in the Mases de Albentosa, a simple building in scaled masonry and ashlar masonry at the corners. The town's civil heritage includes the rectangular town hall with a symmetrical main façade and crowned with a crown clock, as well as the 12th century castle, of which today only the remains of some very deteriorated masonry walls can be seen.
Local festivals include the feast of San Antón, day of Charity and a pilgrimage to the Shrine of La Virgen de la Cueva Santa in Los Mases.
