Cereal cultivation
Cereal cultivation is defined as the agricultural activity of the production of this group of monocotyledonous herbaceous species with an annual vegetative cycle. The most common species in Spain are common wheat, barley and rye. Rainfed cereal is a type of crop that does not require irrigation through any type of system, but is fed solely by water from rainfall. This is a very widespread type of crop in our country; in fact, 83% of the farms dedicated to cereals are rainfed.
Castilla y León is the region with the highest concentration of cereal farms in Spain, accounting for 33% of the surface area and 37% of its production.
Although it is rainfed and each species has specific needs in terms of hydrology, temperature range tolerated and soil type, in order to obtain acceptable yields, the land for cereal cultivation must maintain suitable physical and chemical conditions. This is particularly marked in terms of their retention capacity, as rainfed crops tend to suffer from periods of drought at some point during the cultivation process.
