Picos de Urbión
The Picos de Urbión are one of the highest rock formations in the Iberian System. They form a rugged group of mountains straddling the provinces of Soria, Burgos and La Rioja. At its highest point, this mountainous formation is over 2,220 m high and forms a natural dividing line between the basins of two of the most important rivers in our country: the Ebro and the Duero, which rises precisely in this area.
In the heart of the Picos de Urbión, we find some of the most important ecosystems in Spain, with glacial lagoons surrounded by wide expanses of forests with alternating specimens of wild pine and beech trees. Perhaps the most popular and attractive spot is the area known is the glacial lagoon of Laguna Negra. Such is the beauty of this area that it even inspired one of Spain’s finest poets, Antonio Machado, to write the legend of Hijos de Alvargonzález, included in his work La tierra de Alvargonzález.
Likewise, the importance of this wetland from an environmental point of view has led to the Laguna Negra being awarded special protection to guarantee its survival for visitors to discover the importance of this site. The site has been classified as a Natural Park, and is included in the Natura 2000 Network as a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) and Site of Community Importance (SCI).
