Cañón del río Lobos (Bridge of the seven arches)
The Cañón del Río Lobos Natural Park is a natural space of some 10,000 hectares straddling the provinces of Burgos and Soria.
The canyon is a spectacular natural feature, carved into the limestone rock over the years by the force of the waters of the Lobos River as it meanders throughout this landscape. The park is fully accessible, although some parts of the may have capacity limits to prevent overcrowding. It is also possible to find certain areas of the site closed as a precaution in those periods when the River Lobos is expected to experience significant flooding.
The park is a space of great environmental value where it is possible to find large colonies of griffon vultures. Visitors really immerse themselves in the park on the many hiking routes following the course the Lobos River through this unique and beautiful landscape. A landmark on many of these routes the Bridge of the Seven Arches, which is also one of the main access points to the park. This viaduct crosses the riverbed in the heart of this enclave and a recreational area has been set up next to it.
Without leaving the canyon, we can also visit the Chapel of San Bartolomé, one of the main points of interest in this natural area. The extraordinary location of this temple, surrounded by pools full of water lilies and dragonflies, makes for an idyllic picture in the middle of the wild nature. The 12th century Romanesque shrine has limited visiting hours. Every 24 August, the surrounding area is the setting for the Pilgrimage of San Bartolomé, celebrated every year by the locals in this unique natural setting.
