River Alanzón
The River Arlanzón has its source in the Sierra de la Demanda, a mountainous area in the south-east of the province of Burgos, near the Pico de San Millán, at 2,132 metres above sea level. It rises at the Tañuelos spring, located in the Burgos village of Riocavado de la Sierra.
It is 131.11 kilometres long and its average flow is around 4,408 m3/second. It crosses the north of Castilla y León, passing through Burgos and dividing the city in two.
This tributary of the River Arlanza has a basin with an area of some 2,659 km2. Along its course it is controlled by the Arlanzón and Uzquiza reservoirs before passing through Burgos, and crossing the San Amaro and Arlanzón bridges, the latter built in the 17th-18th century and in which elements of an earlier medieval infrastructure have been included. With a length of 62 metres, a width of 7 metres and a height of 6.9 metres, it is built in ashlar and features segmental arches and cutwaters with balconies.
The Arlanzón is also fed by two tributaries, the Pico and the Vena, and its waters are home to trout, barbels, crabs, otters and water rats, and it is even possible to spot some birds such as ducks, geese and the odd grey herons.
