Aguilar Reservoir
The reservoir is located about 2 km east of Aguilar de Campoo and is 16.5 km2 in size.
It is the largest reservoir in the province and began operating in 1964, which led the towns of Frontada, Cenera de Zlima, Quintanilla de la Berzosa and Villanueva del Río to cease to exist.
It is not only used for hydropower generation and irrigation, but also plays an essential role in regulation and flood control of the Pisuerga River, in conjunction with the Cervera and La Requejada reservoirs.
The reservoir was created by building two loose material dams and a gravity dam, 48 m high and half a kilometre long, one of the longest in the basin.
There is a sizable beach near the dam where sailing sports can be enjoyed. Most water sports, including motor boating, are also allowed on the reservoir.
It is part of the "Ruta de los Pantanos" (Reservoirs Route), which is very popular during the summer months since the water is great.
