Pisuerga River
The source of the Pisuerga River is located at 1800m above sea level in the basin of the Covarrés glacier near Sel de la Fuente.
Its name comes from the toponym Pisoraca, which was the name of an ancient Roman settlement that was located where the town of Herrera de Pisuerga stands today. The Roman legions were stationed there when they were sent to Spain to fight against the Cantabrian peoples.
Its crystal clear waters come from the melting glacier and various springs that accumulate to form small ponds before vanishing into the ground for almost 3,000 meters.
The Pisuerga resurfaces at Fuente del Cobre (Copper Fountain) in the Peña Labra mountain range and flows for 283 km through the provinces of Palencia, Burgos, and Valladolid before joining the Duero River near Geria, after passing through the capital of Valladolid and Simancas. Here the waters of the Pisuerga exceed those of the Duero, which led to a well-known saying in the area that goes "The Duero is famous, but the Pisuerga supplies the water".
The Arlanza River is its main tributary on the left bank and the Carrión River on the right.
At its headwaters are its two largest reservoirs: Requejada, in Cervera de Pisuerga and Aguilar in Aguilar de Campoo.
Part of its waters are channelled through the Canal of Castile in Alar del Rey.
