Burejo River
The Burejo River is the main river in the region of La Ojeda. It is a Palencia river whose source is in the area of Prado Lozano, in the municipality of Colmenares de Ojeda.
It runs 33 km through the lands of Colmenares de Ojeda, where it is joined by the San Millán or Valdeur stream. Then it passes through the towns of Amayuelas de Ojeda, Pisón de Ojeda, Vega de Bur, Quintanatello, and Olmos de Ojeda where it is joined by the Tarabás River (the main eastern tributary), then passing by Moarves, San Pedro de Ojeda, La Vid de Ojeda, where just before it flows into the Payo River (main western tributary) it passes through Villabermudo; Zorita del Páramo and Herrera de Pisuerga. At this point, it flows into the Pisuerga River. The river is fed by a total of 23 tributaries and sub tributaries, making it one of the main tributaries of the Pisuerga River in Palencia.
The name Burejo has its origin in the famous Ebur Castle, which was built at the beginning of the Reconquest and was located in the municipality of Vega de Bur.
Its waters have a characteristic reddish hue, which is due to the red soils of the Ojeda. This high quality water source is mainly used for fishing, but is also used for irrigation. In the past, there were many mills along the riverbanks, especially those in Colmenares, Amayuelas, and Olmos.
In the area where it joins the Pisuerga called Batán de Herrera, was the ancient pre-Roman city of Pisoraca that was linked to the Turmogos. An important camp was established in this area when the Romans arrived and the 4th Macedonian Legion encamped there.
